Why the licence check is your first line of defence

Most rental risk is decided in the two minutes before you hand over the keys. Not by a policy document, not by an insurance rider, but by whoever is at the counter checking a licence. Get that check right and you avoid the expensive problems later: the crash you couldn't claim for, the fine you can't pass on, the vehicle handed to someone who wasn't legally allowed to drive it.

This is a guide to the checks a small rental operator actually runs, and how to make them consistent across staff and locations. It's about drivers of vehicles, so the same logic applies whether you rent cars, motorcycles, or boats.

Check the licence against the vehicle, not just the person

A valid licence isn't the same as the right licence. The renter in front of you might hold a perfectly good card that doesn't cover the machine they're about to take.

• Cars. Confirm category B, and check the expiry date and the photo against the person.
• Motorcycles. Category matters. A1 covers up to 125cc, A2 up to 35kW, and full A covers everything. Renting a 600cc bike to an A1 holder is a problem that surfaces only after the crash.
• Boats and jet-skis. Many waters require a powerboat licence. Check it before the renter reaches the pontoon, not after.

The point is simple: match the category on the card to the category of the vehicle, every time, before the keys move.
